Where to stay in Uluwatu
Dramatic limestone cliffs on the southern Bukit Peninsula — world-class surf, hidden coves, clifftop bars and the fire-dance temple at sunset.
Uluwatu is a clifftop rather than a town. The accommodation is scattered across the southern end of the Bukit between Pecatu, Bingin, Padang Padang and Ungasan, and each pocket sits above its own beach at the bottom of its own staircase. Bingin and Padang Padang are the surf and backpacker end, Ungasan holds the clifftop resorts, and the temple with its sunset kecak sits at the far south-western point.
It suits experienced surfers before anyone else, because these are reef breaks and the wipeouts are onto coral. It also suits couples who want the view and do not mind being a drive from everything. It suits families and non-surfers least: the beaches are down and back up long stairways, and there is no walkable centre anywhere on the peninsula.
Everything is 15 to 40 minutes apart by road, and the roads fill at sunset when the temple crowd moves. April to October is the surf season on this coast.
