Where to stay in Kuta
The original tourist strip — a long surf beach, budget stays and bars, and the airport on the doorstep. Busy and unpretentious, best for a first-night landing or beginner surf.
Kuta is the strip Bali's tourism started on, and it has aged into something more useful than its reputation suggests: the cheapest beds on the island, a long forgiving beach, and the airport ten minutes down the road. Legian immediately north is a softer version of the same thing, and Tuban to the south is quieter still and closer to the runway.
It suits a first night off a long flight, a last night before an early departure, and anyone learning to surf on a sandy break that does not punish mistakes. It suits almost nobody for a whole holiday, and travellers who want calm should treat it as a transit stop rather than a base.
The beach faces west, so it gets the sunsets and the crowds that come for them. Walk fifteen minutes north and the density drops noticeably.
