Kintamani is the caldera rim above Lake Batur, and what you are buying is the view and the temperature. The villages along the rim road — Penelokan, Batur, Kintamani itself — look straight across at the volcano, and the air at dawn is genuinely cold in a way nowhere else in Bali is. Down inside the caldera at Toya Bungkah there are hot springs and the trailhead.
It suits anyone walking up Batur for sunrise, which means starting around two in the morning, and anyone who wants one night of mountain air. It suits a long stay less, because the rim is a string of viewpoints and warungs rather than somewhere to spend a week, and the cloud usually closes in after midday.
Bring a warm layer and something waterproof. Ubud is about 90 minutes below, and most people come up for a single night rather than basing here.
