Where to stay in Nusa Lembongan
A small, easygoing island between Bali and Penida — turquoise bays, mangroves and surf breaks, reached by a short fast-boat from Sanur. Bike-and-snorkel pace.
Nusa Lembongan is small enough to ride around in an afternoon and has three distinct ends. Jungutbatu on the north-west shore is where the boats land and where most of the rooms are, looking back across the channel at Bali. Mushroom Bay just south of it is prettier and quieter. The yellow bridge across to Ceningan leads to the cliffs, the blue lagoon and the island's best swimming.
It suits snorkellers, divers and anyone who wants a few slow days with a scooter and no particular plan. It suits anyone in a hurry less: the fast boats from Sanur take about half an hour but are weather-dependent, and a rough afternoon can leave you waiting.
The roads are narrow, steep in places, and the bridge is single-file. Bring cash, because the ATMs are few and they run dry.
