The wreck of the USAT Liberty lies in shore-entry depth off a black-pebble beach — Bali's most dived site, with the volcanic north-east coast wrapped around it.
Tulamben is one black-pebble beach with the wreck of the USAT Liberty lying a short swim off it, in water shallow enough to enter from the shore. Effectively everything here exists for that: dive resorts along the road, dive shops, and porters who carry tanks to the water on their heads.
It suits divers above all, from first-timers on the wreck to technical divers on the drop-off beyond it. It suits anyone else very little. There is no sand, no nightlife and not much to do dry.
Dive it before nine. The day boats from the south arrive mid-morning and the wreck goes from empty to crowded quickly. Amed is half an hour south if you want somewhere to eat in the evening.
