Where to stay in Tabanan
Bali's rice bowl, inland from the west coast — the UNESCO terraces at Jatiluwih, Batukaru's cloud forest and subak irrigation villages that still run on temple law.
Tabanan is Bali's rice bowl, running inland from the west coast up to Batukaru, and it is spread out in a way that catches people out. The UNESCO-listed terraces at Jatiluwih are the centrepiece, a genuinely vast landscape with walking trails rather than a viewpoint; Pura Luhur Batukaru sits higher again in cloud forest, and the villages between still organise their water through the subak system the listing is actually about.
It suits walkers, photographers, and anyone who found Tegallalang too small and too busy. It suits travellers without a car very little: there is no centre, and the distances between the things worth seeing are real.
Go to Jatiluwih early, both for the light and because the cloud comes down most afternoons. Batukaru is cooler and wetter than anywhere else in this list, and worth a layer.
