Where to stay in Singaraja
Bali's old Dutch port city and northern capital — colonial waterfront, the royal library of lontar manuscripts, and the island's least touristed high street.
Singaraja was the Dutch capital of Bali and the island's main port for a century, and it still does not look like anywhere else here. The old harbour front has colonial warehouses and a Chinese temple; Gedong Kirtya, the library of lontar palm-leaf manuscripts, is the only collection of its kind in Indonesia and almost always empty.
It suits travellers interested in the island's history rather than its beaches, and anyone who wants a high street that is not selling anything to them. It suits a beach holiday not at all — Singaraja is a city and the coast here is working coast.
Most people base in Lovina, ten minutes west, and come in for a morning. That is a reasonable way to do it, though the town rewards longer than most give it.
