Where to stay in Payangan
Deep river gorges north-west of Ubud, where the luxury jungle resorts hide — infinity pools over the Ayung valley, rafting put-ins and almost no through traffic.
Payangan is the gorge country north-west of Ubud, where the Ayung river has cut valleys deep enough to hide a resort in. That is more or less what is here: a scattering of large jungle properties on the valley rims, reached down long private drives, with rafting put-ins on the river below and villages of no particular interest to a visitor in between.
It suits honeymooners and anyone who has chosen a hotel rather than a place, and who intends to stay in it. It suits independent travellers poorly: there is no centre, no strip of restaurants, and getting out for dinner means a drive each way in the dark.
Ubud is about half an hour south, which makes day trips easy and evenings a decision. Check what the property charges for transfers before assuming you will pop into town.
