The ferry port for Lombok and the Gilis, set in a horseshoe bay — dive schools, a blue lagoon beach around the headland, and boats leaving all day.
Padangbai is a working harbour in a horseshoe bay, and the ferries to Lombok run out of it all day. The village behind is small and walkable, with dive schools, warungs and cheap rooms; the two things worth walking to are Bias Tugel over the southern headland and the Blue Lagoon over the northern one, both small, both far better swimming than the harbour.
It suits divers, backpackers and anyone with a boat to catch. It suits people wanting calm less than the map suggests, because the port side is noisy and busy from early.
Give yourself a night here before an early fast boat rather than driving from the south at dawn. The airport is about ninety minutes away and the road is not one to rush.
