Negara is the capital of Jembrana, Bali's far west, and it is the least visited corner of the island by a distance. The thing it is known for is makepung, the buffalo races run through the rice fields in the dry season, which are a genuine local event rather than a performance for visitors. Rambut Siwi, a clifftop sea temple, is on the coast road south.
It suits travellers heading for the Java ferry at Gilimanuk, and anyone curious about a part of Bali that is not organised around them. It suits a holiday base very little: there is almost no tourist accommodation and the beaches are for looking at.
The national park is north and the empty surf coast south, so this is most useful as the middle of a west-coast run rather than somewhere to stop for its own sake.
