Munduk is a ridge village in the northern highlands, strung along one road with clove and coffee plantations dropping away on both sides and cloud usually sitting somewhere below you. The waterfalls — Munduk, Melanting and the Golden Valley among them — are close enough to walk between, and the twin crater lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan are just east.
It suits walkers, people who want cool air, and anyone looking for the Bali that is not a beach. It suits swimmers and sun-seekers least, and anyone in a hurry not much better, because the roads up here are steep, narrow and slow.
Bring a warm layer and something waterproof: it rains here when the coast is dry, and the afternoons cloud over most days. Morning is when the views are open.
