Where to stay in Medewi
One long, slow left-hand point break on the west coast, and a village that exists around it. Surf stays, warungs, and a two-hour drive from anything busy.
Medewi is a wave first and a place second: a long, slow left peeling over a cobblestone point, with the village grown up behind it. There is a scattering of surf stays and warungs along the lane to the beach, and beyond that, not much at all.
It suits longboarders and intermediate surfers who want a point break without a crowd on it, and anyone who genuinely wants to be away from things. It suits everybody else poorly: the beach is dark stones rather than sand, the entry over the rocks wants booties, and there is nothing to do in the evening.
It is a long drive from the south, which is exactly why the wave is still uncrowded. Balian is an hour back east if you want to surf both on one trip.
