Where to stay in Klungkung
The old royal capital at Semarapura — the painted ceilings of the Kerta Gosa court, the island's most serious textile market, and the jumping-off point for Penida.
Klungkung, whose town is properly called Semarapura, was the seat of Bali's most senior royal house, and the remains of that are the reason to stop: the Kerta Gosa pavilion, where the ceiling is painted with the consequences of a badly lived life in careful registers, and the Bale Kambang beside it. The market here is one of the island's most serious for textiles.
It suits a half-day on the way east, and anyone interested in Balinese painting or weaving. It suits an overnight less, because there is little accommodation and most travellers pass through.
Goa Lawah, the bat-cave temple, is ten minutes south on the coast road, and the boats to Nusa Penida leave from Kusamba nearby. The main east-coast road runs straight through, so this is an easy stop rather than a detour.
