Keramas is a stretch of black-sand coast in Gianyar, east of Sanur and south of Ubud, and it is known for one thing: a fast right-hander over a rock and reef bottom that has held world-tour events. The beach clubs sit directly behind it, and the accommodation is a mix of those and village stays back from the sand.
It suits experienced surfers and people coming for the wave specifically. It suits beginners badly — the bottom is not sand and the take-off is steep — and general beach holidays not much better, because the sand is coarse and black and gets genuinely hot.
It works well as a day trip from Sanur or Ubud, both roughly half an hour away, which is how most people see it. Lights are rigged over the break at some of the clubs, so the surf carries on after dark.
