Where to stay in Bedugul

Central lake country — the photogenic Ulun Danu Beratan temple on the water, botanical gardens and strawberry farms, all in cool mountain air.

Bedugul is the lake country in the centre of the island, and the thing everyone comes for is Ulun Danu Beratan, the temple whose thatched shrines sit out in the water. Around it are the botanical gardens, a treetop adventure park and a strip of stalls selling strawberries and corn, all at an altitude where a jumper is a reasonable idea.

It suits families, and anyone breaking the drive between the south and the north coast. It suits a longer stay less well — the lake is chilly, the afternoons cloud over reliably, and the area is a set of attractions rather than a place to settle into.

Go to the temple early, both for the reflection on still water and because the coaches arrive from mid-morning. Munduk is forty minutes on and makes a better overnight than Bedugul itself.
