Bangli is a cool highland town on the road up to Kintamani, and its regency runs from Batur's crater right down into the rice country. Pura Kehen is the reason to stop: a terraced temple climbing a hillside under a banyan, with carved stone stairs and almost nobody on them.
It suits travellers who want the highlands without the rim's prices and crowds, and anyone making their way slowly between Ubud and Batur. It suits people wanting restaurants and things to do in the evening rather less — this is a town that goes about its own business.
Kintamani is about forty minutes further up, which makes this a plausible base for a Batur sunrise trek if you would rather not sleep on the rim itself.
