Balian is a black-sand river mouth on the west coast with a dependable beach break either side of it, and a handful of low-key surf stays on the bluff above. The Bali people mean when they say “before” is roughly this — a bar, a few losmen, and the sound of the river meeting the sea.
It suits surfers and people who want to read a book somewhere quiet. It suits families and swimmers least: the river mouth pulls hard, the sand is steep, and there are no lifeguards.
It sits between Tanah Lot and Medewi, which makes it a natural first or last night on a west-coast surf trip rather than a destination in itself.
